On the East cliff you can visit the ruined gothic Whitby Abbey and the church of St Mary, which inspired Bram Stoker's "Dracula". These are accessed by the 199 steps. Not as bad as they sound, with resting places on the way (to take in the view) and a hand rail.
On the West cliff you can see the Whalebone Arch and the Captain Cook Statue. The Captain Cook Memorial Museum is situated by the harbour You can take a stroll along the East Pier and explore the narrow streets of the town, which house many restaurants, shops and artist's studios.
