Littleborough

December 2024 walk

From our meeting point at Ewood lane we drove to the car park on the Long Causeway and headed north towards Shedden Clough Limestone Hushings. We followed the path over a small footbridge and along the Pennine Bridleway to Cant Clough reservoir and on towards the southern corner of Hurstwood reservoir. At this point we were travelling westwards to encounter the hamlet of Hurstwood where the principal house is Hurstwood Hall, a building in the early Jacobean style, although considerably modernised during the last few years. Originally it was built by Barnard Towneley ( a member of the Towneley family of Towneley Hall) in the year 1579, as appears from the inscription over the main entrance: “Barnardvs Townley et Agnes Uxor Ejus, 1579”. On leaving Hurstwood we crossed foxstones bridge and headed south onto the Burnley way, passing Crow Holes and Middle Pasture farm on to Shedden Heys and back through Shedden plantation to the car park.

A total distance of 8.1 km taking 2.48hrs including stops.
