Starting from the car park just before the White House, we started off North East along Halifax road until the footpath leading North West along the edge of Blackstone Edge Reservoir, which turns more westerly until it meets the Toad Lane path going North. This is an easy incline to follow towards a rocky summit then downhill until it reaches the West Yorkshire/Greater Manchester boundary when it becomes much more rocky to negotiate.
We eventually reach the Byron Edge drain and turn West and North Westerly along the White Holme Reservoir then South West until we approach Cows Mouth Quarry and the gritstone outcrop which contains the Rain Stone, which we initially turn behind to find a carved "viking Head". There are numerous similar carvings in this area.
Moving round the gritstone outcrop we then view the Rain Stone, which is part of the Stanza Stones Trail. The poem, written by Marsden-born poet Simon Armitage and carved by hand by Pip Hall and her apprentice Wayne Hart with a chisel time of 10 minutes per letter, took three weeks to be completed in 2012.
Leaving the quarry area we cross the Cows Head drain and follow the Pennine Way bridlepath South and around to return to our start point.
